Does Squarespace have the ability to edit the page history or page version?
I had to address this after finding a few websites that were of little help here and offered false hopes.
The quick answer is NO! it doesn’t and unfortunately if you’ve edited and saved a page, changed the content and saved it there is no going back! Stop crying, accept your fate. You are going to have to re-build your page.
Why am I writing this? Well I frustratingly edited a complete page in Squarespace, thinking I was editing a copy of the page when in fact I was editing the original. Only after I saved it, did I realise my mistake and couldn’t revert back to the older version.
Can you revert a page back in Squarepace 7.0?
No you can’t sorry!
Can you revert a page back in Squarepace 7.1?
No you can’t sorry!
Help! what can I do to retrieve my page content?
From my own frustrating experience not a bloody lot!! Once you have accepted the inevitable and realised you can’t magically retrieve your lost content there are a few things you can do!
Use https://archive.org/web/ and hope to the gods above your page is old enough to have been indexed. Enter your website or page, see if it has a screenshot of the page and use this to re-build your page.
Images that you used in the page will still be available in the library. Replace images or add images in and browse the library to see what you used and insert back into the page.
If you, like most people nowadays used ChatGPT to write the content of you page, you can look through the history of requests and see if it has recorded the text it originally generated.
Is that it? Yes, I’m sorry. Accept the painful truth. Your page is lost forever!
Can I retrieve a deleted page?
I bring you one piece of good news. Yes you can. In the left hand pages menu, scroll down to the bottom of the page and see the deleted pages option. Click into this and you can restore a page back to the main pages editor.
I’ve seen other websites that say you can edit Squarespace history?
They are tricksters. They just want to massage their traffic stats. I feel your pain. I’ve been there. It’s confusing but accept that some people like to provide false information.
If you got this far in search of a different answer then good for you for pushing on.
Live long and prosper!
